Born 6 December 1936. The crew of the Franco bou Virgen del Carmen jumped and the boat entered the port. The boat of the Pasaia Fleet left the base the day before. Around midnight the guards’ sentinels tied the commander first and the two drivers later. The other crew members joined the goats' intentions and transferred the boat to the Biscay capital. The proa gun was changed, the ship was baptized with the name of San Sebastian, and the Navy of Euzkadi got its first bou.
In October of the same year, lehendakari José Antonio Agirre decided to establish the Maritime Section of the Department of Defence. The new department began its activity on 25 October to form a fleet that cooperates with the Republican Navy. The modest fleet was not aimed at direct access to naval battles, but was created to protect fishing, preserve free navigation in the waters of competition and keep access to Basque ports unhindered.
The bous or armed fishing boats were the essence of the fleet and the first, San Sebastian, was unexpected at the beginning of December. On Day 9, it was decided to rename a number of cod: Hispania becomes Álava, Euzkal-Erria becomes Bizkaia, Mistral becomes Gipuzkoa and Vendaval becomes Nabarra. With the incorporation of the ships of La Estrella and the Ipforo -Izarra, in mid-January 1937, the Basque Navy was formed by seven bous. And they began to organize the services of the watchtower and the sentinels, accompanied by eight dragamines and ten smaller boats. About 900 people were part of the Special Navy.
On 5 March, the Franco Canaries cruiser tried to intercept the merchant ship Galdames, located near Cape Matxitxako. But the small Basques were protecting the civilian ship. The Canaries was the first to shoot. He first went to Gipuzkoa, then to San Sebastian, but both managed to escape. However, Nabarra did not give up and eventually sank by Francoist artillery. They lost the conflict in Matxitxako, but it cannot be said that the only official Basque navy did not fight their enemies. For an hour and a half.
