The blue tsunami was nothing more than Spanish.
CIU is not Catalonia, but it is the one that most resembles Catalonia after yesterday’s elections. Never, even at the time of the successive absolute majorities of Jordi Pujol, did CIU achieve that level of representation. Artur Mas is the president of the Generalitat, Xabier Trias is the mayor of Barcelona, and Josep Antoni duran Lleida is the head of the elections of the State. These are, without a doubt, historic results.
But, after the euphoria – after Duran spoke, until the convergent fans screamed “independence” – remains the raw reality. The blue tsunami has really happened, and Spanish Spain, behind its strongest choice, has tried to shield itself behind the least historical left. And that is, at least in appearance, what Spain has to do, which has to propose a new system of relations between Catalonia and Spain. In politics it is not impossible, but that understanding is very close to the impossible.
The clues will soon appear. If Artur Mas fails to achieve a fairer tax pact, his term of office will double between the closed operating rooms and the angry teachers. And it has little time.
But what happens is that Catalonia has been historic, and so has Valencia. For the first time from the Republic, a politically Valencian Member will occupy a seat in the Congress of Deputies. It's an innovation that joins a country that comes from Joan Baldoví but is new.
