Prisoners and political escapes home, this is an urgent challenge. But what is the most appropriate formula for doing so? For decades, like 35 years ago, we've been targeting amnesty. But one cannot forget its dual condition: on the one hand, it was the gift of a popular struggle full of pain. On the other hand, amnesty also supported Franco and his collaborators, closing the avenues for their crimes to be tried or accepted in the Secession; when the King of Spain signed the 1977 Amnesty Law, among other things, he justified himself.
Amnesty, following etymology, is an amnesia. But forget it, you can only forget what you know. We are well aware of ETA's actions, because it has claimed each and every one of them. Thousands of people have paid a high price for making them. However, the State and its managers have not recognized its hundreds of deaths, thousands of tortured people, etc. It is therefore necessary to seek the appropriate formula, since there is a risk of being covered but without forgetting actions that have never been recognised under the agreement reached on the consequences of the conflict.
