The ELECTION campaign is already in its final stretch and the parties also have little time to attract voters to their networks. Recalling some of the hot elections of the last decade, it could be mentioned that this is very cold, although – due to the decision of the Constitutional Court – its beginning was the hottest of the whole decade. But it quickly lost its pace, at least reminiscent of the 2001 UAE Basque Parliament campaign. This alliance of Mayor Oreja and Redondo Terreros gave the PNV the greatest victory of all time, by the hand of Juan José Ibarretxe.
The Basque Parliament of 2005 also had substance, mainly because, after the Union’s illegality in 2002, the EHAK came out from under the stones and got nine MPs. On the grounds of illegalization, the start of the 2007 municipal election campaign was tense: then, the decision of the Constitutional was Solomonic: Half of the candidates could have been nominated and half could not have been nominated. Navarre Bai’s good forecasts also heated the campaign bapo in Navarre. The good results of NaBai were fulfilled and the attempt to form an alternative government was even warmer.
The 2009 electoral campaign for the Basque Parliament was also not a joke, the patriotic left illegally, the PP and the PSE-EE had the opportunity to take the Basque Government first. And although the elections were won by the nationalists, Patxi López came to the presidency. These 2011 elections, on the other hand, are the elections of Encuentro, both because the illegalization session has been involved and because it is also the first presentation session of the sovereign pole.
And after the initial tensions, it could be said that these elections have been the calmest since 2002 to date. And it won't be because there's no hot spot. In Navarre, for example, a greater tension was expected between NaBai and Encuentro among patriots, but no; it seems that both sides have recognized that the most profitable is to focus on each one in the same, and that they will have to look forward to preserving spaces for collaboration. The polls have always made a big difference to NaBai and it is still the case now; if you check what is being published, the patriotism would receive the best result ever in Navarre with the two current offers.
With regard to the main aspects, the PNV is the best in the polls, once again highlighting its great superiority in Bizkaia. In Gipuzkoa, on the other hand, the competition between Bil and PNV in the polls shifts in favour of the latter. In the struggle between the PSE and the PP, the former falls a little and the latter resists. In the rivalry between the UPN and the PP, the latter doesn’t seem to erode Yolanda Barcina’s party any more than she thinks.
For small PARTIES, this is not good news in the polls. In Navarre, the disappearance of the CDN that has been announced for a long time would finally take place and the United Left will also be excluded from Parliament for the first time, although this time it will be presented together with the Assemblies – the Left in coalition. In the UAE, Aralar and the United Left could lose their representation in the General Assemblies and in the city councils of the capitals.
In the Basque Country, however, the end of these elections will immediately put us in front of the 2013 Basque Parliament elections, because, among other things, they will reflect what the current majority of the PSE-PP really is. And early elections will be required, probably from the first minute. Urkullu will deal with Lopez as with Raxoi Zapatero, without mercy. Or who knows, because the new post-electoral alliances can bring a change of atmosphere in the relationship between the PNV and the PSE.
The electoral campaign is being peaceful, but not everything is solved from the standpoint of normalization: It is necessary to legalize it, to reject the issues of illegalization forever and to launch a peace process that will lead to political normalization. No, there is much to be done, but we are facing the most peaceful elections of the last 30 years, and that is a huge step.
