Stockholm, 23 August 1973. Jan Erik Olsson, a prisoner who was on the street with permission, entered the Norrmalmstorg office of the Kreditbank bank in order to steal. The police arrived immediately, but Olsson attacked them with gunfire. The robber abducted four people inside the branch and made the following demands: To allow his friend Clark Olofsson to enter the bank, a condition that was accepted by the police, three million crowns (about 340,000 euros), two revolvers, bulletproof jackets, helmets and a car.

After a series of tensions between the two thieves and the negotiators and the attempt to penetrate the police the day before - the photo above was taken then - they were attacked with gas on August 28. Half an hour later, the hostages were released and surrendered. During those six days, the thieves and one of the hostages had the opportunity to speak with Olof Palme and the hostage Kristin Enhmark expressed his anger to the then Swedish president, who did not allow the thieves to escape along with the hostages. During the trial, the hostages also testified in favor of the defendants, saying that they felt safe with them and that their fear was caused by the attitude and attacks of the police. Olsson was sentenced to ten years in prison and the charges against Olofsson were dropped.

It was not the first time that the hostages felt empathy for the kidnappers, but this behavior was then named by the Swedish criminologist and psychologist Nils Bejerot: [The Stockholm syndrome].

Twenty-three years later, in 1996, the reverse behavior, the empathy of the kidnappers for the hostages, was called the Lima syndrome, when fourteen members of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement kidnapped hundreds of people at the Japanese embassy in the Peruvian capital. But in that case, the kidnappers did not testify to this supposed empathy, since the Peruvian army killed them all.
