The verdict in Strasbourg became known two weeks ago: The Spanish government will have to pay damages of 23,000 euros to the Basque prisoner Mikel San Argimiro for not investigating the torture denounced by him at the time. The news went largely unnoticed, but it has served to get ERC Members and some other group to ask questions about the issue.

On October 25, the trial of the torture denounced by Igor Porte and Mattin Sarasola will begin in San Sebastián. Fifteen civil guards are on trial. Among other things, the Public Prosecutor ' s Office demands a three-year sentence for two civil guards and two more for two years for having tortured detainees. You don’t often see such a scene and there is no doubt that a lot of expectation will arise.

Almost every year the UN urges the Spanish government to abandon legislation on the incommunicado detention of detainees.

There are dozens of detainees who denounce torture, as Xabier Atristain and Juan Carlos Besance did last week. But it is the same, torture does not exist in Spain, and even in the Basque Country it barely appears in that mirror of the media that solve what is and what is not reality.

The day after I heard Atristain and Besance's torture allegations, I tracked a bunch of media outlets on the net, but nothing, no trace of those allegations: El País, El Mundo, El Correo, El Diario Vasco, EITB.com... Venezuela, which refers to the possible relations of the FARC and ETA and two. And it’s logical because the news is there. But all this has allegedly come from the same source, from the mouth of Atristain and Besance, who have also denounced torture.

Newspapers here included Gara, Berria and Noticias. The media cannot be asked to believe these allegations, but at least to mention that they have been made. Even more so after everything that happened in the previous days with the Venezuelan ambassador.

If you don’t want to ignore it, you can’t ignore it. It is not possible to show such sensitivity to the burning of a garbage can and such indifference to allegations of torture. And yes, it is also obvious that the opposite happens, but one does not justify the other. The challenge of the new times will be to reflect the suffering of the other and to deepen the mechanisms of sensation.

The Spanish public institutions are capable of putting thousands of cameras in the streets to spy on what happens in them, but they are not capable of doing the same in a decent way in police stations, or in police stations where there is a complaint of torture. Or if they put them on, then they don't show the pictures. Maybe because there is no image, maybe because what you see is not appropriate.

Technically, it should be gentle to eliminate torture. Get rid of these prolonged incommunicado detention, allow the visit of a trusted lawyer and doctor during the detention. Investigate and, where appropriate, punish when there are signs of torture. But this also requires social pressure, from the institutions, the media, the parties, the citizens... But the burnt containers are in plain sight, not torture; it is only reflected in the eyes of the torturer and torturer.The comments of MINISTER
