Emotional intelligence, emotional intelligence, emotional intelligence... they are not strange words for us, they seem to be fashionable and I would like to believe that they are also more than just a streak. It seems important to me to recognize, cultivate and channel one’s emotions in the right way and to acquire the ability to recognize the emotions of the neighbor in their words and behaviors.
Neuroscience is taking rapid steps in an effort to recognize the human brain; on the way to unravel why certain emotions are triggered, what chemical reactions are triggered, and what circuits in the brain are triggered. It is proving that emotions have logic, that they can be managed, that we could catalog them and learn to live with them. It is almost impossible for a human being to silence emotions, even if he often does not have the ability to name them. They are at the basis of our conduct and produce consequences, and are therefore real, even if they are innominable. Anger, or fear, unspeakable perhaps, but we live with them; they live with us.
The World Health Organization predicts that 20% of society will be affected by mental illness by 2020. In supposedly advanced societies, it is estimated that depression will spread enormously, with almost half of the population suffering from the disease. Mental health is at stake.
In 2005, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa launched the Emotional Intelligence Promotion Program and began to develop the emotional skills of the management teams and teachers of the schools of the territory, to then work with the students. This is not the only initiative, it will be necessary to see the results and measure whether the objectives are being met.
