The Anti-Incineration Movement has called the citizens of Gipuzkoa on the tour from Lasarte-Oria to the Zubieta incinerator will be held together with them on Saturday, 14 May. San Sebastián Bizirik, Eguzki, Ekologistak Martxan and Greenpeace have together with EAM made the call for motto "The Zubieta Incinerator, what they do not tell us".
On May 14, the first concentration will be held in Plaza Okendo de Lasarte-Oria at 11:00 hours, starting half an hour later to the portal of the incinerating plant on Mount Zubieta. The organizers want it to be a joyful and noisy ride that crosses Lasarte-Oria Street, just as it did in the 2021 march.
According to the EAM representatives, "it is a question of mobilising on foot to the incinerator to require the authorities to stop the incinerator, not burn more waste, either in Zubieta, Añorga, Bergara or anywhere. In the March call this year the following question arises: “At the San Sebastian Incinerator… what don’t they tell us?”
The press conference then lists some of the truths that, according to the militants against the incinerator, the authorities and waste managers do not recognise and conceal. But before the list starts, they've put forward a last-minute piece of news, which no one has yet said publicly: The two furnaces of the Zubieta incinerator have been shut down since 26 April, with no waste burning. No further data have been provided by those responsible for ADEs. If this is confirmed, it may be thought that there has been a breakdown or accident in the process of burning waste. It will be necessary to see what the authorities of the GHK, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and the Basque Government say on the subject.
Moreover, the documents and arguments that AMFE wishes to convey to the public are as follows:
At the San Sebastian Incinerator… what don’t they tell us?
In the Zubieta incinerator, what we in art announce experts and the popular movement, is now happening every day. Unfortunately, the incinerator has not solved the problem of waste, while in and around Zubieta pollution from the combustion of waste is daily. And even if the authorities don't tell us, the damage from incineration is spreading around the world. Yes: in addition to air emissions that pollute the environment, damage the health of living beings and aggravate climate change, Navarre, Bizkaia and Spain have organised a real waste tourism from Zubieta, where escorts and other toxic ashes produced by the combustion of waste are being dispersed.
The managers of the incinerator and the authorities of Gipuzkoa and the CAPV conceal many obscure things from the public:
They don’t tell us… Amount of CO2 they emit in the air per tonne of waste they burn in the Zubieta furnaces. And it's a lot of CO2, which further harms our already crazy climate.
They don’t tell us… 23% of the waste incinerated in Zubieta – almost a quarter of the total deposited in the furnaces – takes them out as slag… and then take them to the cement factories of Arrigorriaga, Lemoa and Añorga, where they mix with cement to continue spreading throughout the world.
They don’t tell us… the dangerous toxic ashes that are collected in the filters of fireplaces account for 3% of all burns and then take them to Castile.
The authorities have told us that they have recovered 6,380 tonnes of rejection of 138,000 tonnes that came to the CMT in 2021… but they do not tell us that another 90,000 tonnes of recyclable waste has been burned to the furnaces. Of these, 60,000 tons of organics, transported in mixed waste to Zubieta.
They don’t tell us, they hide us… The furnaces of the Zubieta incinerator, above all, are for burning recyclable waste, as most of what is burned, 65%, is recyclable.
The collection of organic waste… In many towns of Gipuzkoa it is collected perfectly separated and with hardly any property. And the authorities do not tell us … that they are doing well that the immense organic pure to biometalanise in Zubieta is confused with that of other countries that have selective voluntary collection, that is, with that of many unfit. They hide from us that a lot of organic that serves to make a high-quality compost, well differentiated by the citizenry and well collected by many municipalities, is wasted.
The rest of the organic that remains after the biometering of the Zubieta plant, called digestate, do not eat: They send him to an Artajona plant in Navarra… but they don’t tell us anything about it either.
Although 87% of the urban waste generated in Gipuzkoa is recyclable, only 55% was recycled. This shows that investments must be directed towards the implementation of effective selective collection systems and not towards the construction of a kiln plant for the burning of recyclable waste.
They do not mean … The Gipuzkoan capital, San Sebastian, is anchored in a poor selective collection of 42% without moving from 2019, far from reaching a recycling rate of 50% set by Europe by 2020.
As we are not told… For a lamentable system of selective collection that San Sebastian has, more than 20,000 tonnes of organic waste a year are still mixed in the rejection container.
Our rulers would like it to happen in secret as well: Despite the fact that the European Waste Directive 2018 states that, based on the result of 2010, waste generation should be reduced by 10% by 2020… Gipuzkoa is far from achieving this target.
And although the Zubieta incinerator and other infrastructures are underway, in 2021, in Gipuzkoa, the number of refusals has increased, except in the Sasieta community.
And last minute! The two furnaces of the incinerator have been inactive since 26 April due to technical problems. We do not know what the problems are, how long it will stand and what is being done with the rubbish. Because they don't say it either.
Gipuzkoa’s waste managers and waste authorities spend a lot of money on communications, advertising and propaganda to whitewash and compensate for the huge infrastructure built in Zubieta. They use the ‘Circular Economy’ to talk about the need to deal with the crazy climate and the energy crisis. But they want to hide from the public that the waste management model they promote in reality is waste, wasted energy and public money and harms the health of the citizens. The rulers… Do you say ‘Circular Economy’? What is really circular in your model… is the trajectory of bringing public funds into private pockets.
