The sale of Christmas baskets is launched to help the Zuberoa ikastolas
- The campaign will start on 1 November with the aim of supporting the financing of ikastolas and publicising the products of small producers. They have pointed out that ikastolas are essential to ensure the transmission of Euskera.
Since 2003, the two ikastolas located in Zuberoa – the Ikastola de Aloz and the Eperra ikastola – have carried out a campaign of Christmas baskets. Three different baskets (Ahüzki, Irati and Orhi) can also be purchased this year from 1 to 28 November. All of them have local products produced by the parents of the ikastolas.
According to the organizers, year after year the demand has been increasing. Last year 2,200 baskets were sold, about 500 more than the previous year. Given the situation generated by the pandemic, the sources of income have been reduced to the ikastolas in Zuberoa and it has been reported that the sale of baskets has helped them deal with economic problems.
Guarantee for the transmission of Euskera
In Ipar Euskal Herria the Basque language is not official, and the French State places many obstacles to the minority language. Among other things, this year Paris has decided that the immersion model is "unconstitutional". Seeing the situation, the ikastolas of Zuberoa have stressed that one of the pillars of the baskets is to launch the dynamics that are in their hand: “So that tomorrow and in the future they can live with greater autonomy.” They have also called for the ikastolas of Euskal Herria to drive the use of Euskera in collaboration. “As Euskera’s transmission is being disrupted in Zuberoa, the ikastolas are ensuring the transmission of the Euskera.”
Christmas baskets can be found on the Ikastoli website and have encouraged anyone who wants to help spread the project “to all territories” to contact them.
