Why are some users changing to the Mastodon social network?
- In recent days, many Twitter users are approaching the free and distributed social network Mastodon to leave their Twitter account. The platform, based in the United States, has recently closed several accounts of the Spanish State, most of them left-leaning, and that has driven change.
The hashtag #YoMigroaMastodon was one of the most used by Twitter users in the Spanish state on Sunday afternoon. The reason is that in recent weeks the social network has closed or temporarily suspended several accounts, following the boycott campaigns against them in the right-wing or Spanish courts.
Closed accounts also include those of Basque citizens, e.g. @DonMitxel_VI, with over 20,000 followers.
Free and distributed social network
Users who have come to the mastodon have found a system similar to Twitter, but there are things that are different. For starters, there are no big multinationals behind the project.
It is made with free software and is a decentralized social network: unlike commercial platforms of this kind, in Mastodon there are several instances that federate with each other. There are two bodies addressed to the Basque community: Mastodon.eus and Mastodon.jalgi.eus; the ARGIA account is in that first instance.
