Subcontracted public service personnel should not know Basque according to the High Court of Justice of the Basque Country
- The City Hall of Barakaldo subcontracts the service of Civic Centers and in 2021 requested 26 workers to know the level B2 or C1 of Euskera. The Vocento Group reports that the CCOO union appealed against the City Hall and now comes the judgment of the High Court of Justice of the Basque Country.
In Barakaldo, 26 undersigned workers, responsible for the implementation of different cultural projects and for the coordination and management of the Civic Centers. In view of the direct relationship with the citizens, the City Council asked them to have the Basque level accredited, and as the Vocento group has expanded, although they were subrogated earlier, in 2021 they were asked for the first time to have profile 2 or 3 of Basque – the second in the case of administrative and maintenance personnel and the third in the case of technicians. The High Court of Justice of the Basque Country considers that being “an indispensable requirement” to access the job is “unfair”, as they are not public workers and also not all workers have “direct relationship” with citizens. The City of Barakaldo granted them a period of two years to start working and obtain the title.
Council: "We demand to centralize our rights"
The Council of Euskalgintza denounces that on social networks we are facing an "other attack" of the judiciary, emphasizing that the judgment of the High Court of Justice of the Basque Country violates the fundamental rights of citizens, because "it makes access to service in Basque difficult".
