What about Patziku Peru?
The recent controversy between Santi Leone and Lucía Baskaran unleashed the polemics of Basque literature on the occasion of the interview that recently deceased writer Hasier Etxeberria did to writer Danele Sarriugarte a few years ago. As a sign of the long rope it has brought after the debates, a number of opinion leaders have left the social networks behind, so that, as Patxi Huarte Zaldieroa told us, ‘Euskal TxioHerria is in danger’.
The surprises of chance, the media ball of the rampant controversy went down when the writer Patziku Perurena introduced the book The Birth and Evolution of the Embroiderers in Leitza and Areso (1427-1925). But, unlike the writings of Leone and Baskaran, Perurena’s book and words have hardly echoed in Basque newspapers, magazines and social networks. Why? Has Perurena not made a long and fruitful career in transgressing the Basque letters? Aren't Perurena's sharp pen and her vivid and naughty style enough arguments to make news of the culture pages from a detailed 99% study? Putting your hand in your heart, reader, do you think the same thing would happen to other Basque writers?
Someone could argue that Perurena’s book refers to Leitza’s dwellings and that that’s why the book has had no impact on the Basque media. Following this argument, it was expected that the City of Leitza would organize in the town a presentation worthy of the years of investigation, even though the author was one of the most experts in the microhistory of Leitza and also awarded by Euskarabidea. But they didn't care. Perhaps because Perurena's words are too honest or too harsh for many ears?
Then we will dance our pure hypocritical languages by saying that Basque culture must show diversity, channel and guarantee the free movement of opposing ideas and opinions. Nice place! Because here the finest studies are silenced, and this time by those who claim to be champions in freedom of expression.
