The association Memoria Gara was born with the objective of turning the church of San Francisco de Asís de Zaramaga into a space of memory and human rights in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The Church became a symbol of the events of 3 March 1976, in which the police abuses that caused 5 deaths took on greater prominence. Memory Gara wants to keep as a symbol of memory what until 2014 was the religious center of Zaramaga and has been working on its implementation for more than a year.
In order to deepen the definition of the memory space, days have been organized from Monday to Friday. In the days, the possibility of reflecting on the management model and the exercise of ecclesiastical intervention to set the center in motion will be opened.
Previously, during the month of January, three workshops were organized to collect the opinions and contributions of the citizens on the topics to be discussed in the days.
The conference will involve 15 experts in various topics. These are three thematic blocks that will revolve around the contents of the space of memory, the management model and the artistic and architectural intervention that the Church of San Francisco will need.
Today’s program will start at 18:30 in the Palacio de Montehermoso, with the participation of Paco Etxebarria, Maider Maraña, Emilio Majuelo, Iñaki Arrieta and Zuriñe Rodríguez.
The next two sessions will take place at the Bibat Museum, also at 18:30 in the afternoon. To reflect on the management and artistic aspect, they will have the presence of directors and creators of renowned museums in the Basque Country.
