Gestamp will close Zamudio plants and fire 230 workers
- Following the announcement of the redundancies in July, the company announced last Tuesday the number of workers it plans to lay off at the Zamudio plants. It has eleven workplaces throughout the Basque Country.
The multinational Gestamp has announced the closure of two floors and the dismissal of 230 workers in Zamudio (Bizkaia), the company has reported. Last Tuesday he announced his intention to close two of his eleven jobs in Euskal Herria. The company Matriceria Deusto and the engineering of dies GTS are in charge of closing the closures, both located in Zamudio. The intention to lay off workers was announced last July by the trade unions.
The company claims losses in the first half of the year: They have given a figure of EUR 120 million, referring to the situation created by COVID-19. So far, however, it has made huge profits: EUR 220 last year and EUR 258 million in 2018, according to the LAB syndicate. It also includes institutional subsidies, such as the signing in January of an agreement with the Basque Government, which provides for an aid of EUR 8 million for the regional executive.
In recent years, this company based in Abadiño (Bizkaia) has grown considerably: It has 112 workplaces and 43,000 workers. It also has plants in Bizkaia, Erandio, Gallarta, Derio and Muskiz.
