The decision was made known early this Monday evening. White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said Donald Trump reported Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday in a phone call about his intention to withdraw U.S. troops from northern Syria.
"Turkey is going to make rapid progress with the operation it has long planned for northern Syria. U.S. forces will not participate or support the operation, and U.S. forces, defeated by the caliphate of Islamic State territory, will not be in the vicinity,” Grisham said.

On Saturday, Erdogan announced an independent military intervention in the eastern Syrian area of the Euphrates River, in an attempt at a military coup. YPG’s attack on the Kurdish Civil Protection (IS) militias is what Turkey is doing with the aim of ending the militias. This threatens the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria, also known as Syrian Kurdistan or Rojava, and the revolution taking place there.
Awaiting US support for the attack, Erdogan stated that Ankara "has been left with patience". The United States, for its part, has left the way to the attack; so far, against the Islamic State, the United States and the YPG militias have acted as allies in an area threatened by Turkey’s attack. At a time when the United States has withdrawn from the threat and left Turkey free to take up northern Syria.
The Syrian Democratic Forces reported this Monday morning that US troops have begun to withdraw from the area. In addition to all the efforts they have made to prevent the conflict, they have ensured that the United States has not taken over its responsibilities. Add the following: “The Turkish attack we have not provoked will have a negative impact on our fight against ISIS and on the peace and stability we have created in the region in recent years. As the Syrian Democratic Force, we are determined to defend our land at any price.”
Erdogan, admired by the Kurdish militias, has declared himself to be "terrorist" for his involvement with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). His government began in 2018 the invasion of Syrian Kurdistan with the annexation of Afrín, causing the death of more than 2,000 people. The announced attack is a continuation of the invasion.
