Neighbours have taken to the streets of the locality to condemn Barakaldo’s latest machist murder. Last Friday, an 84-year-old woman was murdered and her son was arrested as alleged perpetrator, the Ertzaintza confirmed. The Women's World March of the Basque Country has convened concentrations in the four capitals of Hego Euskal Herria and in Barakaldo to denounce this murder and all forms of violence against women.
Plaza
Bide Onera has been the main venue of the concentration in Barakaldo, where banners have been placed with messages such as "No Unanswered Aggression" and "Macho Violences with Thousands of Facial Expressions". Barakaldo's feminist movement, the Zirta group, has emphasized that male violence is "a structural problem" and that, more than an "individual problem" or a "private problem", it is "social". In addition, they have warned that they are particularly vulnerable to the "dependence" suffered by older women, as indicated. In a statement read at the event, they denounced that “many women have been abused for years, but have not been able to report them.” They recalled that this was the first Machista murder in 2025, but that in 2024 there were six others.
Attendees
have also criticised the lack of effectiveness of victim care systems. "Where are the means and effective measures? they have asked, and they have demanded stringent resources and away from "institutional marketing," they have explained from the Bilbaíno Consistory. In pre-concentration statements, Mireia Saiz, a member of Argitan, stressed that “male violence cannot be seen as a family” and asked self-critical institutions because “they do not have effective support”.
In addition to Barakaldo, the concentrations were held in Bilbao in front of the Arriaga theater; in Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca; in Donostia-San Sebastián in the Boulevard; and in Pamplona/Iruña in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
