According to ELA, from 6 October the workers in the residences of Gipuzkoa will return to the strike. Workers in the sector have seen the need to resume the struggle begun two years ago, with worse working conditions than they had at present before the pandemic. “If then [in the pre-pandemic era] we were talking about semi-slavery working conditions, what we are suffering today is cruel to workers in the sector,” they warned. Thus, they have decided to start a strike to achieve a collective agreement that improves the working conditions of workers and the service provided to users.
They have recalled that the pandemic has hit residential homes hard, with a large number of residents killed and infected by several workers. They have pointed out that this experience has “exploited them physically, psychologically and emotionally”, and added that in this situation “they have been left aside” by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and the companies behind the headquarters. In this sense, they have pointed out that “the contempt and the bad management of companies and the Council”.
Faced with this situation, they have opted for a resumption of the struggle. After concluding that the pandemic required them to act responsibly, residential workers disconvened the strike on 13 March. After the experience of recent months, they hoped that working conditions and quality of service would not deteriorate further, but as their situation has actually worsened, they decided to resume the strike that stopped after 243 days of strike.
They stressed that a public surveillance system must be put in place, and not a system that “enriches the friendly companies of the Member”.
