- 7,000 people gathered in Bayonne on May 4th to voice Ikastol’s complaint aloud. The 36 schools of Lapurdi, Bajoran and Zubero are on red alert. For several days, children, parents, teachers, workers and academics have responded with a mass and colourful mobilization to the persecution that comes once again from Paris.
In this period there are teacher positions in the game. There will be 230 more students in the schools in the next academic year, causing the need to create 25 teaching positions. But in March, the Academy inspector informed Seaska that there would be no more teachers.
The poor teaching position will have a direct impact on the quality of education and 2/3 of the classes will be affected. In particular, with fewer teachers, more students will accumulate per class. With classrooms of 45 students, those who need the most attention will be the first to be affected: to start children with limited capacity, followed by students who do not listen to Basque outside the classroom, to finish those who are in school difficulties.

In essence, this state peak is only a succession of a long series of the past. Yesterday, shaking the spectre of the Falloux Law, they obstructed the collaboration of schools with public resources. 13,500 students study Basque in schools. 25% are enrolled in schools, while the other 75% are enrolled in public or Gypsy schools on a parity of hours or between 3 and 6 years of age following full teaching time in Basque. In the last 20 years, the family transmission of the Basque language has decreased by 10 points in our territory. In this context, all models (ikastola, public, Gypsy) are necessary... but only one of them is effective in transmitting the language. The only model that makes the children completely different is the school. The only model that proposes a real immersion is the ikastola. And the only model with 80% growth in the last 13 years is the ikastola. They know all about it in Paris.
On the other hand, what is not so clear in Paris is the attachment of this country to schools. The first demonstration was the tamborrada. The second will be the People’s Pass. There will be others until we win. We will win this battle. But soon, because we don’t spend the energy we waste on self-defense creating alternatives. High, self-defense makes us fast, but free to create the alternative!
