Forty years ago, the constitution of the Basque Government was celebrated, and Iñigo Urkullu stressed the “importance of the institutions of self-government” in the coronavirus crisis. To reinforce this message, lehendakari cited Osakidetza, the Ertzaintza, the education system, the social protection system or even the economic concert, among others.
To remember the fortieth anniversary, Urkullu sent a message in Basque and Spanish through a video. “In these four decades, our institutions have offered us protection and well-being,” he stressed.
He looked back and recalled that on 7 October 1936 the first Basque Government was formed. 'It was born of the struggle for the freedoms of the Basque Community'. José Antonio Agirre was the first lehendakari to hold the presidency of the Basque Government. “The Basque Government launched the institutionalization of the Basque Country that we know today,” said Urkullu. "He suffered war and dictatorship. He saw how he had been forcibly removed from self-government. It kept alive the representation and voice of our people in the world.”
According to Urkullu, after the dictatorship and the years of exile, and as a result of the adoption of the Gernika Statute, the Basque Government ‘in democracy’ was relaunched on 9 April 1980.
“This anniversary allows us to become aware of our history: of the effort and commitment of our predecessors, of the commitment to overcoming difficulties, of the importance of joining forces above inequalities,” he stressed.
Urkullu considered that yesterday's day was a day to recognise the "contribution" of all Lehendakaris and Basque advisers. He also reminded all the professionals who have provided the public service “through the institutions of self-government”. “On 9 April 2020, it is a good day to recognise the road ahead and to continue to build a better future.” He also looked to the future and called to build “a more open, more advanced, more supportive and more just Euskadi”.
Carlos Garaikoetxea was the first lehendakari of the Basque Government after the dictatorship. The term of office lasted until April 16, 1984 and all members were from the PNV. The members included Pedro Miguel Etxenike (Education), Ramón Labaien (Culture), Pedro Luis Uriarte (Economy and Finance), Felix Ormazabal (Agriculture) and Javier García Egonxeaga (Industry).
I received your e-mail in personal mail on the strike portals. At first, like many others, I thought it was to let you know what options we have in the face of the strike. But no, the e-mail received was a political and communicative movement against the strike.
I will confess... [+]
