Eneko Goia said that, although in Madrid the negotiations are still in the air, if the PSOE and the United Nations can manage to form a government in Spain, the City Hall will again address the issue of the relocation of the Loiola headquarters and the Martutene prison. In fact, according to the mayor, “the circumstances that have been given so far have prevented it from being addressed because having a government in office in Madrid complicated things.”
GOIA, for its part, believes that now, with the new government, a new opportunity would be opened: “We’ll see what’s going to happen, but if the government goes on the path of normalcy, we’ll do it again at the point where we leave the issue.”
As he explained, the council has twice addressed the issue of the transfer with the current Ministry of Defense, but in both cases the relationship has not been fluid, “because conditions do not exist”, according to Goia.
As for the prison, the mayor explained that the process is more advanced and that he hopes that the second phase of Txomin can be developed shortly. As for the barracks, Goia said that things are more complicated because there are a couple of issues that make it difficult to negotiate: on the one hand, the army owns the barracks because it has bought them and, on the other, the Ministry of Defence has the will to maintain a military facility in the territory. However, the Mayor has stressed that there are possibilities for overcoming these conditions and has been hopeful of finding solutions to the situation.
