With the argument of "avoiding risk situations", the new municipal government of Pamplona has launched an important measure during the festivities of Sanfermin. In places where the pacifier is celebrated, the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and the Plaza del Castillo, has banned "the display of large flags and fabrics that can cover many people". The order of Maya states that it is intended thus "to avoid any involuntary mass movement, as well as any direct or indirect damage".
The bando prohibits access to the plaza with clubs, glass vessels or beverage cans, to which it adds the possibility to include also fabrics with flags or other symbols on this occasion. However, it makes no mention of the large objects that are commonly seen for propaganda.
"It is clear that the ban not only affects security, but also affects freedom of expression," says Euskalerria Irratia on his website. For a long time, the ikurriñas and fabrics with vindictive messages have been banned at the beginning of the festivities in Pamplona, which led to a conflict and a great indignation among the people of Pamplona. However, in the last four years, with the mayor of EH Bildu, Sanfermin has become a very colorful principle, without censorship of political and social messages. Last year there were nine flags – ikurriña, from Navarra... – and fabrics with messages, without problems or incidents.
Against sexist aggressions
On the other hand, the side maintains the strategy against sexist aggressions initiated two years ago. No sexist attacks, free Pamplona! The municipal corporation has shown its support for the motto and has reiterated its commitment to pursue this type of attitude and invites the citizens to "accompany" and "isolate" women in the face of any type of aggression of a sexist nature. The City Council of Pamplona/Iruña recalled on the side the ban on sexist plates and t-shirts.
