The Mayor of Treviño, Elena Ramírez, and the Mayor of Arganzún, Roberto Ortiz de Urbina, visited the Spanish Senate on Tuesday to explain to the senators the situation that lives every day in their municipalities. They explain, among other things, how the issue affects education, agriculture and/or industry. It supports the recent proposal of the Basque Government to form a working group among all the institutions involved in the matter.

Both the PP and the PSOE have ignored the demand. The Senator of the PSOE, Marcelino Iglesias, has asked to deepen the agreements recently signed by the deputies of Álava and Burgos. He supports the idea that what the mayors put on the table "are the same problems that occur in 80% of the internal territories of our country" and that living so close to Vitoria-Gasteiz is an "advantage" for the Treviños.

A higher income

María Begoña Contreras, of the PP, said that what the mayors explained "does not correspond to reality" and argued that the income per inhabitant of Treviño, although lower than the income of the Basque Country, is higher than the average of Burgos.

Contreras uses another argument to say no to the petition: If an enclave of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country were located in Castile and León, "there would be no confrontation", adding that "the pride of our statutes must be maintained in both cases, both in Castile and León and in the Basque Country". As expected, in addition to the PNV and EH Bil parties, Unidos Podemos, ERC, PDeCAT and Coalicion Canaria are expected to support any proposal that would provide a solution to the issue. The mayors, Roberto Ortiz de Urbina and Elena Ramírez, have requested the formation of a working group to solve the issue.
