The workers of the Ubik creation library in Tabakalera have been on strike for 26 days and the issue is already coming out of the media before, but at the moment public institutions do not seem to have a solution. The Board of Directors of Tabakalera, formed by the City Hall of Donostia-San Sebastián, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and the Basque Government, has been prepared to keep open the “channels of communication” in relation to the strike, although they have not announced any further steps.
“The Council has shared and analysed the documentation and information that has so far been related to this matter and has ratified the position of Tabakalera, taking into account that, as it is a labour dispute, the problem must be resolved in the context of the relationship between the company Sedena and its staff,” notes in particular the note sent to the press by the Governing Board of the International Centre for Contemporary Culture in San Sebastián.
Ubik employees have previously met with several representatives of the company’s board of directors. Among others, as reported on 14 January, they met with the Mayor of Donostia, Eneko Goia: “He has confessed to us that our working conditions are bad and that Tabakalera is going to have to put more money on the table, but at the moment there are no concrete proposals,” the strikers said on their social networks.
Therefore, it seems that Ubik’s strike is going to go ahead. The workers are receiving the support of the citizens: they are collecting signatures every day at Nestor Basterretxea Square since the start of the strike and have appealed to the citizens to bring complaints to the children of Tabakalera.
Adopted Tabakalera strategic plan
Ubik's was not in any case the main point worked by the Management Board. The main outcome of the meeting on Tuesday was the new strategic plan for Tabakalera, which was launched this Wednesday. This document, which will be the axis of the lines of work and projects that will lead the center in the coming years, has been developed by the direction of Tabakalera and shared with the other institutions of the cultural center.
In addition, the Management Board has approved the 2019 budget: The amount is EUR 6,096,475,75 and the contribution from each entity is EUR 1,630,000. In addition, the Board of Directors of Tabakalera has decided to increase its own revenue to EUR 1,206,475.75 for self-financing, which accounts for 20% of total funding, which is a two-point increase compared to 18% last year.
Finally, he accepted the professional profile to be requested from the person to serve as Director of Culture of Tabakalera. Following the announcement by Ane Rodríguez that he leaves office, he will be vacant and is expected to appoint him for spring.
