The cease-fire agreed between HAMAS and Israel, through international mediation, has been in force since Sunday. On its first day, Israel has freed 69 women and 21 teenagers, nine of them minors, and Hamas has freed three Israelis. A total of 630 humanitarian aid trucks have also been mobilized.
Some of the newly liberated Palestinians have spent more than a year in solitary confinement. Among the liberates, they have highlighted the politics and activist Khalida Jarrar and journalist Bushra al-Tawil, who have worked throughout the day. The three Israelis who have been released by HAMAS have been arrested in the attack on 7 October. As part of this first phase of truce, Hamas will release 33 Israelis in the coming weeks and Israel is committed to freeing 1,890 Palestinians from their prisons, according to the agreement.
In the next phases of the agreement, Israel and HAMAS will have to start negotiations with the Government to bring about the final end of the war. In any case, Netanyahu has assured that he has "all the support" from the United States.
Humanitarian aid
Meanwhile, a total of 630 humanitarian aid trucks have entered the Gaza Strip last Sunday. The trucks have moved on the border pending the entry into force of the truce, which Israel has so far prevented with attacks directos.El UN Deputy Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Coordinator Tom Fletcher has stated that "there is no time to lose" and needs are "enormous" after 15 months.
90 per cent of the population of Gaza is displaced, and although after the cease-fire thousands of displaced persons are returning to their homes, many have been left homeless. Most homes are destroyed and the health system is completely collapsed.
