Trump angers the Sioux people and environmentalists by authorizing the construction of pipelines
- On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump resumed construction of the country’s pipelines, Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines DAPL. These two projects have been stalled since last year, as resistance from both Aboriginal and environmentalist groups has been strong.
The answer was immediate. Aboriginal people and friends had built several camps to obstruct the construction of the DAPL pipeline, but 76 people have been arrested in one of these camps. According to the local sheriff, this camp is in the private area, and as a result they have been expelled. It is precisely on these lands that the pipeline will pass, and the police say that they belong to the company that will be in charge of its construction. For the natives, however, these lands belong to the native Aboriginals.
Indigenous Activist Winona Laduke on Democracy Now! He told the media that Trump has declared war “not only on local Aboriginals, but on anyone who wants to drink water.” The Standing Rock Sioux tribe reports that Trump’s order has broken the law and his treaties with the tribe, and they will appeal to the courts for an answer.
Almost a year of struggle
The protests began in the spring with the expansion of the DAPL route, and since then about 700 people have been arrested during the protests there.
Only a small part of the pipeline remains to be built. But that part, which will pass by the Standig Rocks Sioux Reserve, will ruin the residents’ sacred sites and graves by building the infrastructure. In addition, the Missouri River flows through this area, and environmentalists say the construction will pollute the waters.
Trump’s decision has sparked protests in cities such as Washington, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Philadelphia, and elsewhere, with local Sioux spreading their call to join the resistance.
