After last year's lockdown prevented the mobilizations of the First of May, this year the workers of Euskal Herria have taken to the streets. However, the perimeter closure and the health measure have brought with it unconventional mobilizations. The High Court of Justice of the Basque Country (TSJPV) considered that the right of demonstration is not a sufficient reason to break the perimeter closure. The decision provoked the anger of the unions, who claim that this is an attack on the fundamental rights of society. However, mobilisations have been massive.
ELA claimed that “it is time for change” in the mobilizations that have taken place in the four capitals of Hego Euskal Herria. The Secretary General of Lakuntza in Bilbao, Mitxel Lakuntza, stated that they do not want to repeat formulas to emerge from the 2008 crisis and that to do so they will touch "the door of the left", which says "more rights, less cuts".
He added that ELA has proposals for these changes. For example, he talked about the importance of tax reform: “We demand fiscal reform in the Basque haciendas before the summer. We have two reasons for this: on the one hand, to increase resources and to help the sectors and citizens most hit by the crisis. In other words, no one should be thrown down the road.”
They insisted on the need to create, organize and mobilize collective consciousness to generate change, and they insisted that they would continue to prepare and drive change.
LAB, in addition to the capitals of Hego Euskal Herria, organized demonstrations in Baiona and other municipalities with a clear message: “The moment demands a new general strike and LAB is ready to talk about it and seek consensus on that path.”
In a statement in Bilbao, Secretary General Garbiñe Aranburu said that they are trying to “criminalise” their struggle, remembering the detainees in Pamplona and sending the message “they will not get us out of our way”.
He stressed that the struggle for change of direction is the time to continue supporting all trade union and social organisations: “Change will be driven or not by the sovereignty and leadership of workers.”
They consider that the eco-socialist and feminist transition is an alternative and suggested that their proposals are being shared at the institutional level, in the workplace and on the street.
