An ertzaina is sentenced to six months in prison for beating a woman detained at the Getxo (Bizkaia) police station in 2018. The woman was arrested for disobedience to authority, because the Ertzainas criticized a man's behavior in front of a supermarket and took her to the police station.
The Bizkaia Court agrees that, in addition to the six-month prison sentence, the police will be required to disqualify for public office for time of conviction and a fine of EUR 900. It is also obliged to compensate the victim with EUR 12,400 for the moral damage caused.
For women, the authority has been fined EUR 540. However, the jury stressed that the woman had not performed “aggressive acts” during her detention.

The woman “snatched her face and neck” from the ertzaina, who gave her “two hard punches.” The Court notes that video recordings have been very important for the resolution, both from outside supermarkets and in cells.
