Thousands of people are calling for an end to emergency legislation at the demonstration organised by Sare
- Thousands of people have demonstrated in Donostia-San Sebastian to demand respect for the rights of prisoners at the general demonstration called by Sare. The march started at 17:00 hours from the Old Tunnel and ended on the Boulevard.
Before the start of the demonstration, a group photo was taken with political parties, trade unions, social and individual actors. The mobilization has received broad support: PNV, EH Bildu, Podemos and the unions ELA, LAB, UGT, STEILAS, ESK, EHNE, ETXALDE, HIRU, CNT and CGT have shown their support for the hunger strike. In addition, it has had the presence of representatives of the Catalan countries: Dolors Bassa, Carmen Forcadell, Oriol junqueras, Raül Romeva and Josep Rull.
In the final act, Arantza Aldezabal and Joseba Azkarraga have read the note and have pointed out that today they have taken to the streets in defence of human rights: “The rights of all people without exception. Because human rights cannot be separated into plots, they cannot defend one and reject another.”
In Sare’s view, “steps have been taken this past year”, but there are still steps to be taken: “We have left behind the prisons in Levante, Andalusia or Galicia, but there are still some 100 prisoners in Spanish jails and some twenty in France. Now we have to empty the jails of Castile, Aragon, Cantabria, Asturias, Logronño or Madrid, and the members of Iparralde have to do the same with the French jails.”
Aldezabal has stressed that justice is being sought: “We are demanding ordinary legislation that would prevent prison sentences for all concealed life, that would make possible the progression of the degree and the prison permits that are the rights of Basque prisoners.”
The Basque Government took over the competence of prisons on 1 October, and Sare considered that there is now the possibility of developing a humanist and non-repressive prison policy. In this regard, they have stressed that "there is nothing more to join Sare" in this objective. However, they have pointed out that, if not, they will continue to remember that “it takes courage, justice and humanity to achieve a just peace.”
They also wanted to express their “respect” to the victims of all forms of violence. “We want to transfer this respect to them because it is compatible with demanding respect for the rights of those who have been deprived of their freedom to respect the victims of any violence suffered in our country,” they added.
Finally, they recalled that on 8 January there was an "important quote" for "peace, coexistence and solution". In addition, they have called on the public to turn to the repulsive concentration. Finally, the Gatibu group has gone up on stage and put people to sing and dance.
