The PSOE, the PP, Vox and Citizens have voted against the constitution of the committee of inquiry in the Board of Spokespersons of the Spanish Congress. PSOE spokesman Héctor Gómez has pointed out that the party has opened other avenues for the issue to be studied “with total transparency”. He stresses that he has activated the Committee on Reserved Expenses and that he will explain in it the director of the CNI, Paz Esteban. In various media it has been reported that the government can sacrifice Esteban, trying to reorient his political situation with his resignation. The US spokesman for Podemos, Pablo Echenique, has criticised the position of the PSOE, pointing out that not constituting the committee of inquiry is to close the doors to clarify possible espionage. The PP has expressed its commitment to the PSOE against the commission of inquiry because they are “a State party”.
Nationalist forces
The nationalist parties of Catalonia and Euskal Herria that usually support the Spanish Government in Madrid have expressed their discomfort and astonishment. ERC spokesman Gabriel Rufián has said that the PSOE’s refusal “jeopardises” the legislature and “democracy itself”. Aitor Esteban of the PNV has stated that the PSOE has acted “totally wrong”. “Someone will have to give some explanation,” he asked, stressing that trust is “totally broken.” Mertxe Aizpurua of EH Bildu pointed out that the PSOE’s position is “regrettable” and stressed that the other mechanism proposed by the PSOE to channel the issue, the Secret Committee, is not the solution: “We all know that secrets have never been shared in this committee.”
Sánchez will explain in Congress
It has been approved that the President of the Spanish Government should give explanations in the plenary session of Congress at the same meeting as the Board of Congress Spokespersons. Nationalist parties, More Country, Carlos and the PP have voted in favour of the appearance. We can, in this case, have voted against the PSOE hearing, but they have remained in a minority. Sánchez’s hearing has no date, but the PSOE has stated that it is better than the CNI Director, Esteban, and the Defence Minister, Margarita Robles, to explain. Robles will speak on Wednesday in the Congressional Defense Committee on the case of espionage.
