The death on November 14 of the Mapuche Camilo Catrillanca by the Chilean Police has sparked protests, according to Igor Susaeta in Berria. According to official sources, police officers followed a network of car robberies when they began shooting each other and shot to death Catrillanca, a tractor driving a vehicle. The Mapuches, on the other hand, do not believe in the official version and assure that the agents attacked "directly" the tractor with which they worked.
The murder sparked imminent protests in the state and is now escalating, as the Chilean Government has underlined that the officers removed the recording of the police operation. As a result, four police officers have been arrested on the scene. Chile's vice president, Andrés Chadwick, has stated that what has happened to recordings is "unacceptable."
The Chilean football team has also joined the protests without heeding the orders of the Chilean federation. In the match against Honduras, the two teams kept a minute’s silence as a sign of mourning. The player of the Chilean team Jean Beausejour placed on the back of the t-shirt his mother's name, of Mapuche origin.
