Mapuche prisoners are on hunger strike and thirst to ask the Government of Chile for freedom
- By COVID-19, the Chilean Government has released one third of the prisoners, but none of them, 13,321 prisoners, Mapuche political prisoners (now 26). For four months they have carried out a hunger strike and 16 of them have also begun a thirst strike.

ELEVEN of the prisoners who continue on hunger strike have been hospitalized and their condition is serious. 26 Mapuche prisoners are held in three prisons. Some of them have already been sentenced and others have been in prison for months, awaiting trial.
The Mapuche political prisoners in Lebu prison reported on 28 August that among the officials in their module there have been confirmed cases of COVID-19 and three Mapuche political prisoners have symptoms. Prison doctors are also not adequately treated for patients with severe symptoms (tachycardia and others) resulting from the hunger strike, and have denied the prisoners' trusted doctors access to prisons. They have denounced that the seriousness of the situation in which these prisoners are being held is being concealed.
Outside prisons, families have set up a camp from which they have asked the Government to act daily. Solidarity marches are taking place throughout the country and protests are taking place.
Mapuche struggle
They call for compliance with Convention 169 signed by the Government of Chile in 2008. This document recognizes Mapuche as a people and grants them their rights over land and territory, as well as for the management of their language, identity, education and health. The document also points out that in the criminal field, the people of origin will have special measures in line with their culture, and that priority will be given to other penalties in relation to prison. They denounce that in times of pandemic this is more necessary than ever.
