Following tradition, the German Communist movement met yesterday in Berlin in tribute to the Communist leaders Rosa Luxembourg and Karl Liebknecht, who were murdered on 15 January 1919 under the orders of Social Democracy. The mobilization was attended by people and groups from all over the country: The route linked Frankfurter Tor (next to the emblematic avenue of Karl Marx) with the cemetery where the bodies of Liebknecht and Luxembourg are located. In the end, they dedicated the memorial to all fallen socialists.
The history of this mobilization comes from tributes to the Weimar Republic, which began with the murder of Karl Liebknecht, which was attended by 100,000 people. Shortly afterwards, Rosa Luxembourg's body was found in an acequia and was buried with his partner in the Friedrichsfeld Cemetery, in a corner destined for "common criminals", after the judicial veto to to bury it in the historic Cemetery of the Fallen of March.
Despite the fact that in the recent past these demonstrations have taken place in a more or less relaxed manner, the political situation has put the environment under pressure. Since the beginning of the Palestinian genocide, the German Government has intensified its campaign of criminalisation against solidarity with Palestine, which has also intensified repression against the Communist movement. In 2024, this brought police burdens on the annual mobilization with dozens of wounded and detained.
This year, the situation has been even more violent. The police presence was impressive from the outset: before the mobilisation began, he warned by public address that he would not agree to "praise criminal individuals" or show symbols of solidarity with the Palestinian Resistance. The demonstrators responded with a number of songs in favour of the liberation of Palestine and the internationalist unity in Palestine.
Shortly afterwards, the police charged the concentrates that were at the scene. These attacks, including blows and pepper gas, left several wounded, who were seriously injured. Four of them had to be immediately hospitalized, including two minors. In addition, several persons were arrested.
A demonstrator explained to the Socialist Journal that the nervousness of the police is also related to the growth of a communist youth movement. The movement has come to the streets this year as a cohesive bloc that has demonstrated its ability to cope with the burdens. With red flags and banners, the first police charges did not break their lines, but the officers continued to attack the rest of the protesters. After the first charges, the march continued to the graveyard and the attendees left thousands of red roses at the foot of the memorial to the fallen socialists.
However, the calm was brief. At the end of the demonstration, when the participants left, the police charged them again with a police charge. According to the latest information from Red, the protesters were surprised by the police forces in the vicinity of a metro station, preventing their departure. Witnesses have denounced more arrests, blows and the use of pepper gas and have said that a man lost consciousness because of the beatings received by the agents. The authorities forced the demonstrators to head inside the metro, where they were trapped as the attacks continued, according to the same sources. The organizers have been concerned about the possibility of more arrests in the coming days, in an increasingly harsh and endless repressive environment.
