Time to show the risks of the social and economic system
- A number of actors have warned of the future difficulties of many workers in the face of the marginalization suffered by migrant women and the forthcoming crisis. Thursday, 17 October, is celebrated around the world on the day of the struggle that faces all of them.
The aim of 17 October is to put the victims of social exclusion in the light of the spotlight. It is International Day against Poverty, a day when people with scarce resources are remembered. Awareness sessions will be held in Euskal Herria, in which different agents will focus on people affected by poverty.
Donostia-San Sebastián’s Poverty Zero platform will work on migrant women and, on 17 October, a number of activities will be carried out. This platform consists of 21 associations and social movements, as well as the Coordination of Development NGOs of the Basque Country, which brings together another 79 Basque Government Foreign Development Organizations.
The poverty rate has not increased, on the contrary, it has decreased. Proposals to cure the problem
The associations denounced that in the presentation of the actions of Poverty Cero, the human rights of millions of people in poverty are violated “without measure”, adding that “the majority are women”. In view of this situation, they have made proposals to deal with them. The associations have called, inter alia, for the closure of detention centres for foreigners for minors.
A demonstration will be held in Bilbao on Thursday, with the participation of various social bodies, neighbourhood groups and trade unions. On Sunday, 20 November, the associations will organise a cycling march in Donostia-San Sebastian as a symbol of the fight against the pobreza.En November another workshop, a film marathon, will be organised. Poverty Zero has pointed out that all these symbolic actions are a sign of the fragility of the system: “The shortcomings of our social structure, which does not take into account the care needs of societies, are evident.”
