Bilbao to host a demonstration against energy poverty on Saturday
- On 26 March, the Sakeoaren ez dynamic, the right to energy, has called for a mobilisation. The denunciation of energy poverty will go to the streets and demand that citizens take urgent action to deal with this problem.
“With almost a year of monthly increase in the price of light, news about new records and historical peaks have become almost common. If we look back, we can see that we're paying twice as much as we were paying a year ago. It is therefore becoming more and more difficult for us to make ends meet.”
This contextualization gave rise to the public reading not of the Saeo, the dynamics of the right to energy, in a press conference held on Thursday in Bilbao. The dynamic was presented on 18 February and announced that a demonstration against energy poverty will be organised on 26 March. Last month, they again made a hearing to recall the demonstration and call on the citizens to come to it.
The dynamic, composed of environmental groups, trade unions, housing groups, neighborhood associations and youth associations in the surroundings of Bilbao and surroundings, has been launched with the aim of denouncing energy poverty. At their hearing in February, they explained that they required emergency measures to deal with this problem: "On the one hand, to ensure that electricity cuts are genuinely paralysed and measures are taken to curb the indebtedness of people who are unable to cope with the electricity bill. In the same vein, it is essential to limit the wealth of electricity, among other things, making it difficult to set the desired prices".
The dynamic of the rise in energy prices is framed in the generalized increase in life, as gas and oil have risen greatly in recent months and the price of housing has also surpassed historical levels. According to the dynamic, “it is necessary to place the rise in the price of light in the framework of the capitalist system, which feeds and enriches itself through the impoverishment and precariousness of the lower classes. This gap is increasing and exceeds the limits of the needs of the planet and of the people.” They also stressed that this gap also exacerbates the remaining structural imbalances, further aggravating energy poverty in the case of young people, women, people with functional diversity, migrants and people in an irregular situation.
“While electric oligopoly accumulates wealth, thousands of people have to decide between buying to eat and lighting light, and that’s unacceptable.” The complaint will be transferred on Saturday to the street, not to the Saeo! Right to energy! In the face of the rise in the price of light, everyone on the street! Through the mobilization that under the slogan “La Paz” will be held in Bilbao. The demonstration will start at 18:00 hours from Plaza del Arriaga in Bilbao.
