SOS Alde Zaharra is an agent of neighbors and neighbors of the neighborhood that aims to build a dignified life in the neighborhood. At the hearing on Wednesday morning, they highlighted some of the consequences of the tourist process, as well as the testimony of two neighbours who have been forced to leave their homes.
The promoter has denounced that the increase in tourist apartments and rooms has led to an "unsustainable" increase in rent prices. In addition, they have clarified that most of the houses available for rent are becoming a business for tourism, which completely reduces the possibilities of the neighbours.
In addition, they have explained that the increased presence of illegally rented housing through different tourism-related platforms "has harmful consequences" in the neighborhood. As they have explained, "the lack of rest of their people, the speculation of housing and the problems of emancipation of young people" are increasingly being heard.
Added to all this is the situation of the neighboring Casco Viejo, Eider Palmou. As Palmou himself explained, he came to live in the neighborhood sixteen years ago and in 2018 he realized that there was an illegal tourist apartment on his portal. "How do we learn?" Well, like most of us, every weekend new people, many movements of unknown people, parties on the stairs, continuous tumults, etc."
He explained that, in order to deal with the situation, he lodged a complaint both in the tourism department of the Basque Government and in the Urbanism department of Bilbao, but did not receive any answer: "Today, February 26, 2020, I have not yet received a reply."
Now, unable to cope with the situation, he decides to sell his house: "I leave, but they have pushed me to leave, I don't want to be fighting every day to live peacefully, I don't want to be asking for fights and ammunition every day – which is of no use, by the way – I don't want the Ribera market parties to spoil my dream – that we don't sleep four nights earlier and that what we do is send the police against us."
