Opposition reproaches Uriarte for holding teachers accountable for poor PISA results
- As a result of the poor results of the UAE in the PISA exam, the head of the Education Department, Cristina Uriarte, visited the Parliament on Wednesday and announced a series of measures to transform the educational model. These measures relate mainly to the performance of teachers, with which the opposition disagrees.
They have been the worst results in mathematics and science since the first PISA in 2003. Uriarte advocates a “paradigm shift” in education. He has abandoned education based on “academicism and exposure” and defended a methodology that “favors active research and learning”.
Uriarte has put a lot of weight on teachers to carry out this “paradigm shift”. According to the counselor, the school management teams perceive that teachers have “deficits and training needs.” He explains that the new curricula have competency-based approaches, “but the teaching profession must internalize the pedagogical change that this entails: abandoning academicism and moving from an explanatory pedagogy to a more investigative one.”
In this way, it proposes the introduction of a test of access to the teaching studies and reports that they are talking with the universities.
The opposition does not agree with the weight imposed by the counselor on the teachers. Rebeka Ubera, representative of EH Bil, said: “You want to put the responsibility on the teachers, to divert attention. Teachers need resources.” Juana Bengoetxea of the PP also adds that it is the model that has not passed the test, not the teacher.
