The title may surprise many people because gentrification processes are expected in the towns of the capital and the coast (a decadent environment becomes fashionable for innovations and, due to rising prices, residents cannot continue to live in it). As you know, there is also internal tourism, which aims at mountain and forest.
In the latter case, due to the touristic evolution that is taking place in Alta Navarra in recent years, the location of a house is becoming a very serious problem, in some towns and valleys more than in others. There is no doubt that the biggest problem in the valley is depopulation and social ageing. Oh my God! ! In the Pyrenees, not everything is Bucolic; in the newspapers and on television programmes more things are happening than the messages that are heard by the political leaders.
Behind these caring villages and beautiful landscapes, there are real lives, people's places of life. As everywhere, our environment is organized by our rhythm of life: the need to go to work, to reach agreements between different, day by day, routine… That entails the need to hit countless doors and butterflies to be able to do/manage/achieve anything.
"The search for housing is becoming a very serious problem due to the tourist developments taking place in Navarre in recent years"
This lack of housing particularly affects two groups: young people (whether or not they have a family project) who have decided to carry out a life project in their villages and valleys and those who come to work. These two groups have different needs and realities.
This text refers to the case of people who come to work. Typically in these valleys, the job vacancies are as follows: Linked to the Administration (secretaries, teachers, doctors/nurses, veterinarians…), care (because the population is old, care tasks weigh a lot) and hospitality.
In all three cases we find the same problem. The workers who come to fill these jobs have nowhere to live, because there is no provision for these needs, or because what has been done so far has not been enough. Municipalities do not have financial resources and the Government of Navarra is only interested in selling a good “photo”.
The leisure and pleasure of visitors are worth more than the daily life of the locals. That is, we keep the environment in the eyes of the visitors, beautiful, accessible... fulfilling all the needs and desires of the visitors; putting the daily lives of their inhabitants in the background. Is it true that tourism is an important source of income in the valley, but to the point of harming the daily lives of the locals?
In other words, the improvement and investment of the people are moving in that direction. The comfort of visitors prevails, ahead of the well-being of residents.
The regulations and limitations that are heard elsewhere are not reflected here. Any kind of tourism is rentable. In addition, it seems that if you don't target your heritage to tourism, you lose money. Does it not pay the rent honestly who rents it all year round?
At the same time, it is paradoxical that there is a lack of collective vision, the objective of which is to save oneself. Private property management and the freedom to decide what to do with it can be lawful. The most surprising thing, however, is that, knowing what you need (in some cases the basic services worker, the hospitality worker or the family member), you also want to maintain that personal business model.
If the only bet is tourism, we will soon have theme parks rather than towns. Beautiful and idyllic decorated prepared for our free time, which will be decorated outside the holiday and leisure dates.
Another dark aspect of tourism is that those who live in it do not have long-term economic development, while those who live outside tourism cannot dignify their life project. Why? Because the Pyrenees do not have a sustainable country project.
Does not all citizens have the right to live in dignity? Is it not going to guarantee a sustainable project that all citizens have the conditions to live in dignity? Those who serve an older relative in the residence, those who serve pots, those who educate heirs in the school, as well as veterinarians who serve animals.

In 2021 we began to hear the first echoes of the Guggenheim Urdaibai project. The then General Manager Unai Rementeria told us that it would be done yes or yes. To reinforce his claims, he left 40 million euros “shielded” by the time the museums were built. There it is!... [+]
