They denounce that the use of cuprous oxide to combat pine disease is very toxic
- The Naturkon group has strongly criticised the plan presented by the Basque Government and the three Basque parliamentarians to deal with pine disease, since the cuprous oxide proposed by the institutions is toxic: “Will our representatives explain to us how they thought that our rivers or the water we drink will not be poisoned if 124,000 hectares of our mountains are smoked?”
“In addition to the intrinsic risk of the substance, as the fate of the product diffused by air with these speeds cannot be controlled, aerial plant protection treatments are prohibited in the European Union except in very exceptional cases,” explains Naturcon-. In addition, it is toxic by inhalation of cuprous oxide and irritant by skin or bronchial contact. As if it were not enough, and because it is very toxic to the aquatic fauna, the administration itself requires that in these treatments a safety strip of 50 meters be respected around the rivers and streams.” The group of 16 naturalist and conservationist organizations in Gipuzkoa asked the institutions directly: “Do you have to think once and for all about whether it is worth putting society at risk?”
The group has also criticized the measures included in the plan for the recovery of the forestry sector in the Basque Country. It says that it is wrong to say that the proposed plantations benefit biodiversity, that the sector has 20,000 jobs and that they represent 1.5% of CAPV GDP: “The introduction of sawmills, stationery, steel factories or other factories in the sector to alter these statistics is a fraud. As if no one could see the long lines of trucks that come every day to bring wood from the communities outside the Hernani trash can.”
The naturalist group has rejected the Basque strategy for the recovery of coniferous forests, “as if we did not know that the only coniferous forests we have in the Basque Country are the red pines of western Álava and the small pine grove of Dueñas, of the species Aleppo”.
