Jon Iñarritu asks to clarify the role of the Spanish Government in the case of Pegasus spying
- EH Deputy Bildu Jon Iñarritu has announced that this week they will ask for the hearing of the Security and Intelligence Officers and the Government President, Pedro Sánchez, to "clarify as soon as possible the role" of the Executive in political espionage through the Pegasus program. Through this program, the calls of the mobiles of Arnaldo Otegi and Jon Iñarritu, as well as those of the 65 Catalan independence politicians and activists, have been controlled.
On April 18, The New Yorker magazine released research from the University of Toronto (Canada) institute The Citizen Lab.
Pegasus is the software of the Israeli company NSO Group, which states use to investigate serious crimes and which must be done with the consent of an investigating judge. "We are aware that some states that do not have great democratic guarantees use it to collect political information (...) we already knew the cases of Hungary and Poland and now Spain has joined them", said EH Deputy Bildu Jon Iñarritu in Euskadi Radio. He explained that a year ago he knew that they were controlling his mobile phone, as communicated by the institute of the University of Toronto. The researchers found that the last entry with this software on the deputy's phone occurred in December 2020, when the coalition government of the PSOE and the United Nations Podemos was in function.
Iñarritu has pointed out that he has three reasons to think that behind this espionage case is the Spanish State: "First of all, this software is only sold to states. Secondly, we are all the political representatives of Catalonia and the Basque Country. What other state would have an interest in spying on us? Finally, if it had not been Spain, it would come to light that an investigation would be opened".
