They wanted to translate the situation into the result of a ball game to see how they are being lost this year: 21-5. Since the EHNE trade union, they have pointed out that feed costs for animal feed have increased by 25%, that energy is also on the increase and that the margin of sale has continuously decreased: “According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, in the last five years, on average, the margin for every 100 kilos of fattened meat has dropped from 104 to 60 euros.”
During the pandemic, food consumption grew and, according to farmers, the shopping cart is 40% more expensive than fifteen years ago, but that has not been reflected in their income. They complain that, at the beginning of the pandemic, their sector was considered fundamental and now “they have tightened up again very well”, “often forcing them to sell below the cost price”.
They also complain that, looking at the food chain, they are affected and should offer them “more than surviving”, thus becoming an attractive work option and “guaranteeing the future that will bring people to the rural environment”.
They have asked the Government of Navarre to intervene to reverse this situation and to put in place the necessary means to do so. They have pointed out that many farms are currently subsidised, but they do not like this “dependency” situation.
They have also expressed concern that if the current situation does not change, many small farms will have to close it and take their place in the industrial model, “and we know the consequences that this has on rural areas”.
They also call for the complicity of consumers, especially when they are suffering unfair campaigns against meat: “We think it’s more important to eat good meat than to eat a lot.”
