Paris City Hall has put forward a plan to drastically reduce traffic by 2022. Traffic will be banned in the four central districts and priority will be given to cyclists, pedestrians and public transport in general. The City Hall believes that a greener and safer urban space will be created.
David Belliar, delegate of transport and mobility, explained through social networks that "although Paris wants to reduce traffic, it is not a matter of suppressing traffic as a whole. Residents, people with reduced mobility, taxis and neighborhood traders will be able to continue to access.”
This limited traffic area, which will be implemented in the first half of 2022, would make it possible to reduce noise, recover space for green areas and combat pollution, according to the City Hall. The daily influx is 180,000 vehicles, ten times more than those living in the area.
The mayor, Anne Hidalgo, has ordered a drastic reduction in traffic, opening bike lanes in the main areas of the capital and closing some of those streets for cars, as well as the docks of the Seine. This year the consultation with citizens and traders will be concluded in order to clarify the details of the plan, which will be dealt with in due course.
