The new coalition of the People’s Party and Vox of Palma de Mallorca (Balearic Islands) has decided that the linguistic priority of municipal communication should be changed from Catalan to Castilian. They worked that way 36 years ago, but now the language rules have changed. This is agreed by the municipal plenary of 27 July.
Until now, officials could speak in Spanish or Catalan when talking to the citizen; the fundamental thing was that all officials acted according to what I was talking before. However, with the new resolution, officials will necessarily have to speak in Spanish. According to Vox, citizens who do not know Catalan received “discriminatory treatment”.
The CCMA, the public media corporation of Catalonia, has announced that the initial proposal was from Vox and that the Popular Party has not been able to say anything negative. For its part, the PSOE and More Palma have rejected the decision.
