Citizens of Santutxu (Bilbao) demand the closure of the new McDonald’s
On 13 December, a mobilization was called at Santutxu (Bilbao) to denounce that the American company is part of the genocide against the Palestinians. The neighborhood's neighbors have emphasized that they don't want multinational companies to support the massacre in the neighborhood.
This Friday the new McDonald’s will open in Santutxu, in number 51 of Zabalbide Street, the fifth of Bilbao. Faced with this situation, the neighbours of Santutxu have launched a boycott campaign against the company, which has already been completed.
Neighbours have established the company’s relations with companies linked to the Palestinian genocide. They indicate that these types of companies “have no place” in Santutxu. They criticize that there are some corporations among the shareholders that provide international support for the massacre, such as those engaged in the arms trade or those that have direct contact with Israel. Thus, BlackRock, Vanguard, Capital Group, Wellington, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley or Geode Capital, among others.
They have also denounced that the new McDonald’s responds “to the needs of a multinational that wants to expand,” rather than to respond to the needs of the neighborhood.
Therefore, this Friday, the day of the opening of the premises, at 19:00 in the afternoon, a demonstration has been organized from the Ritxi Square of Santutxu. Under the motto '.
World boycott
Along the same lines, BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) has called for the global boycott campaign to be intensified. The agent fighting for the human rights of the Palestinians and against Israeli apartheid has called for the boycott of McDonald’s, while the company supports the genocide in Gaza.
The Israeli franchise has accused the organisation of feeding the army and protecting the genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza. This, according to the BDS, directly connects the multinational with violations of international law and crimes against human rights.
The BDS has stressed that the connection with the Israeli Army and the protection of apartheid crimes must have consequences. The movement has called on citizens around the world to press through the boycott until McDonald’s suspends the Israeli franchise agreement and stands clearly in favour of human rights. The BDS has stressed that popular initiative boycotts can have a lot of influence in forcing big companies to change their policy.
