The San Sebastián comedian Oscar Terol presented on Sunday Abre los ojos chirigota in the official competition of the Carnival teams of Cadiz (Andalusia, Spain). This chirigote unleashed denial messages against climate change and vaccines, and the public reluctantly took the show.
The audience felt that the level of performance, music and scenography did not correspond to the competition and immediately began to scream and sing aloud. The public insisted that the jury suspend the performance, but the current regulations do not contemplate the possibility of suspending the performance, except for security reasons or due to another emergency situation.
The group acknowledged that it did not reach the level of song and performance of the competition, but explained that they had suffered an internal boycott because some of the members had left the group a few days before the competition. The chirigote also received shouts of disagreement when he left the theater.
Terol has apologized.
Terol has released a video to give her an opinion on what happened on Instagram. He points out that he was invited by some “strangers” to participate in the Falla Theater contest and said yes “obsessed” without thinking twice.
Terol says she arrived in Cádiz three hours before the show, joining the chirigote “without knowing anyone”. He soon realized, however, that he “didn’t look good”, among other things, because of the level of the costumes, which “seemed to be from the supermarket”.
Terol believes that the audience “deserved” her because the show didn’t have the right level. However, he says that he does not apologize for his ideas because he shares some of the ideas in the braid and “any idea can be defended within the framework of humor.”
