Almost a quarter of the population of Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa has health insurance
23.9% of the CAV population had health insurance in 2023. Compared to data for 2021, there has been an increase of 4.1%. Most of the consultations were in traumatology, ophthalmology, gynecology and dermatology. 61.3% of the insurance comes from companies or other groups.
Every two years, Eustat analyses the evolution of private insurance and has just provided data from 2023, according to EITB. On average, 23.9 per cent of the population of Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa had health insurance. By region, in Bizkaia the percentage is 30.7%, in Álava it is 19.4% and in Gipuzkoa it is 15%, respectively. Between 2021 and 2023, the population that had contracted health insurance increased by 4.1%. Between 2019 and 2021, the rise was 6.4% due to the pandemic.
In 2023, private insurance recorded 1.8 million consultations. Almost half of the consultations (43.8%) were concentrated in four specialties: traumatology (240,000), ophthalmology (191,000), obstetrics and gynecology (184,000) and dermatology (158,000). In Primary Care, the number of consultations was much lower: 129,000 in family medicine and 87,000 in pediatrics. Women hired these insurance slightly more than men (52.8% and 47.2% respectively). The highest age range was 45-64 years, with 34.8%, followed by 25-44 years, with 26.1%.
In 2023 insurers received 398 million euros, 8.7% more than in 2021. 69.9% left the pockets of the Vizcayans, 19.3% of the Gipuzkoans and 10.8% of the Alaveses.
The majority were collective (61.3%), for companies or for other groups. 33.9% were individual and family members and 4.8% corresponded to public mutual societies of officials of the Central Administration of the Spanish State. Between 2021 and 2023, collective insurance grew the most (5.2%), individual and family insurance increased by 4%, while public mutualists decreased by 8%.
