The mayor of Ordizia expects the use of the mask to be mandatory
- On the afternoon of 7 July, the mayors of Ordizia, Beasain, Lazkao and Idiazabal met at the Zumarraga hospital with members of the Department of Health and Safety. The Health Advisor, Nekane Murga, reported after the meeting that 1,700 PCR tests have been performed and that until then 35 infections have been detected in the 1,000 tests analyzed. It has ruled out the possibility of re-establishing confinement, although it has advanced that some measures will be reinforced in an instruction that is expected to arrive today. The mayor, Adur Ezenarro, pointed out before that meeting that the Health Department has not provided the City Hall with data on contagion and that precautionary measures have been taken since the beginning: Wednesday's municipal markets and colonies have been suspended and amusement parks have been closed, as well as the Majori sports club, public theatre, library and public buildings.

In fact, since 5 July the website of the City Council has already made public the note they received from the Department of Health in which it is explained. And in this sense, he has opted for the adoption of preventive measures, but necessarily "blindly", since in Naiz's interview he pointed out that the Health Department does not share data on contagion with the City Council and knows them with the media. One of the first steps taken by the City Hall was the closure on Sunday of three bars of Etxezarreta Street (Haka, Miami and Kebab), when the Department of Health of the Basque Government reported that a bar in the area could be the focus of this reappearance of COVID-19. Yesterday, through a citizen call, the mayor reported that the workers at this bar had tested negative for PCR tests.
The City Hall has closed the public activities and services mentioned, has asked the citizens who have carried out the PCR test and are waiting for the result not to leave their homes and has reminded everyone that it is necessary to use masks.
More action is expected
After hearing more information at yesterday’s meeting, the City Hall will rethink the measures taken so far and analyse what will be taken for the future. According to the Diario Vasco, the possibility of expanding amusement parks is being studied, as they see the expansion of this focus linked to nocturnal leisure. Health Advisor Nekane Murga explained after the Zumarraga hospital meeting on Tuesday that cases of contagion in Ordizia have occurred in the area of leisure and youth. Goierriko Hitza was in charge of receiving the appearance of Ibon Gaztañazpi at the end of the meeting. In Murga’s words, “we’re talking about people between the ages of 18 and 35, and although they have few symptoms, they can pass the disease to older people.” The counsellor explained that the main reason for this is the over-closeness and the lack of measures on the part of the Basque Government. In this sense, he has emphasized the importance of maintaining distances and the use of the mask in all activities.
Concrete measures have not yet been announced, but Murga has explained that "a number of legal measures are being considered". According to the Diario Vasco, the measures being worked on may be the reduction of capacity in bars, the reduction of night leisure, the inability to demand it in the bar, the consumption sitting on the terraces, etc. In Radio Euskadi, the mayor of Ordizia was interviewed in Spanish after the meeting held in Zumarraga. Asked about the lack of containment, he replies: "This has been said by the counselor and will therefore be the case," said the President of the Government. Regarding the new measures to be taken, he pointed out that on Wednesday they expect details of the hospitality industry and the measures that will generalize the use of masks. It indicates that since Monday "we are repeating by public address in all the people, please, for all citizens to use the mask. We have recommended it so far, we hope that the order we receive on Wednesday will be firm in the use of masks, and that at this time, at least in Ordizia, it will be mandatory."
In an interview with Euskadi Radio, Erkoreka stressed the importance of data transparency in order to "make decisions". "We don't know exactly where the numbers of contagion are, because this outbreak has many branches, but yes, the main focus is in Ordizia, with 19 infections. What is happening is something special: the information we would like to receive from above and the information we lack comes from below. Once the citizens have been aware of the results, whether positive or negative, we have been informed. We're grateful for that, but we're still worried because they're processing a lot of the PCR results and we don't have the full picture."
