- The Council of Euskalgintza of Aiaralde launched a year ago the dynamic ‘Euskaldunes Candidates’ for the municipal elections of 28 May. They ask the political groups to choose candidates and candidates who know Euskera and to note each list.
All the cards are on the table. Last week all the lists for the municipal elections on 28 May were officially published, and the members of the Council of Euskalgintza in Aiaralde had to do a great job. In fact, the lists of the region have been analyzed one by one, quantifying the number of Basque candidates and thus assigning a score to each list.
Last Thursday, the results of the study were made public at the hearing in Faktoria. They recalled that a year ago (April 2022) the dynamic ‘Euskaldunes Candidates’ was launched. “First we met with all the parties with representation in the municipalities of the region,” they explained.
A document was presented to the political groups and subsequently published (June). “It had two main sections: one, when making the public candidacy for the parties, each candidate was appointed to be a full Basque, Basque or Spanish candidate; and two, a note was given to each candidate from the point of view of the Basque Country, and it was explained that this candidature was to be made public.”
They asked the parties for an “exercise of transparency”, understanding that knowledge of the linguistic competence of candidates is “key information” for “citizens to exercise their right to vote independently and with sufficient information”.
They also wanted to encourage the presence of Basque candidates on the lists. For the members of the Council, “an Euskaldun candidate guarantees linguistic rights, as he is at least bilingual, able to listen, understand and respond to all citizens in his language”.

Results
At Thursday’s hearing, the Council sent a “rigorous criticism” to all parties in the region, because they have not publicly reported whether their candidates are vasco-speakers or not. “If the mere fact of reporting meant acknowledging the importance of language, compliance with this requirement was an exercise of transparency… What does it mean not? It was an easy step and we have seen with displeasure that it has not been done.” Members of the Council therefore hope that from now on the political groups will report on this information “both in the acts and in the brochures to be sent to the mailboxes”.
The members of the Council of Euskalgintza have analyzed a total of 32 lists of the region, and thus have concluded that each candidate or candidate or candidate for mayor, that is, the person who understands and speaks in Euskera, the person who listens, or the person who has in Spanish. “We have then noted the list. To do so, we have scored the candidates and the councillors, in order, depending on whether they are whole Basque, Basque or Castilian speakers.”

Thus, it has been shown that among the candidates for the studied mayor there are 17 sisters, 5 opposed and 10 erdaldun. Regarding the note, “the 16 lists exceed, 7 do not reach enough and in 9 cases not enough information has been obtained”.
In this regard, the members of the council denounce the denial of information by some parties.
Opening call
In the view of the members of the Council, the analysis carried out is relevant because it “includes transparency, voting rights and linguistic rights”.
Therefore, the agents of the Basque Country have been called to “open outside the region”. “We would also like to recall that the linguistic policy of the political parties and the attitude and action towards linguistic rights are an important element in achieving the normalization of the Basque country.”
In this regard, they report that other initiatives will be taken in this regard.
Time to renew commitments
In fact, as four years ago, the Council of Euskalgintza of Aiaralde will ask the candidates of the region to make concrete commitments to the Basque Country, continuing the Bai, we can campaign. The event will take place on Wednesday at 17:15 at the Saraube table.
They will recall the commitments made by the political groups in the preamble to the previous municipal elections and report on the fulfilment of those promises. Note to each list
The Council of Euskalgintza of Ayala analysed a total of 32 lists submitted to the municipal elections on 28 May and noted each of them, following criteria presented to the political groups a year ago.
The note has been dropped from 0 to 10. The formula for scoring is as follows: Candidates for Mayor (23 points of ear, 5 points of ear and 0 of Spanish), Councilman 2 to seventh (2 points of ear, 1 points of ear and 0 of Spanish) and Councilman 8 (1 point of ear, 0.5 of ear, 0 of Spanish).
