When is a food sovereignty counselor in the CAV? (II)
- It seems that today nobody wants to talk about this issue in the Basque Country. A few years ago, the need for a food sovereignty advisor was also argued. But all that the system shut down was, they said, very reactionary. In addition, the opponents of this idea confused the autarky food with a similar proposal.
But well, even though years have passed, at this time (in the coronavirus crisis) we are warning that many of the foods produced here are outside the main marketing circuit. Why is this happening? We produce little for the population we are, although what is produced is quality production. Therefore, in Euskal Herria we have off-the-shelf production that is more likely to meet the goals set by the United Nations for the year 2030. How do you understand this?

The future will tell us what is really reactionary and what is obligatory for the primary sector and for Basque society. In my opinion, the food sovereignty counsellor is more urgent than ever in the CAV, and, of course, throughout the Basque country. Why? What for? For example, to give some meaning to the goals set by the United Nations for 2030. Also, of course, to work on the reflections on climate change and to accommodate sustainable production in education. But above all, because, as coronavirus has shown us so well, having a strong primary sector is mandatory in any advanced and non-advanced country. And because we have to take care of the fishermen and the baserritars “in our own way”. And, in my view, the best way of caring is to put food sovereignty into practice.

Let us not continue to do what we always have, for if not, to see how many fishermen and baserritars we have among ourselves in a few years' time. What will then be its empowerment and role in the economy of the Basque Country?
When things change radically, how will we strengthen and activate the economy with old values and thoughts? Perhaps it is the time for other approaches and visions. Perhaps this is the time for food sovereignty.
