New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has resigned this Tuesday after the Attorney General's Office filed a dozen allegations of sexual assault. "Because of the situation, the best thing I can do is take a step back and let the government re-govern. And that’s what I’m going to do,” Cuomo said before leaving office.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office began the investigation five months ago to investigate the allegations against the politician, and the first data of the investigation has been made public on Tuesday. Prosecutor Letitia James explained at a press conference that they had interviewed 179 people and that they had collected 74,000 tests against the former governor, including documents, messages and photographs, in which she had participated. The prosecutor has stated that all of them show a "scandalous but clear picture" of what happened.

Cuomo is accused of touching, kissing and hugging several women who worked with him between 2013 and 2020. The former governor, who has defended his innocence from the outset, has assured that the accusations he has made are false. “I have given hugs and kisses to people throughout my life. Women and Men. It never crossed my mind that I crossed the border with someone, but I realized to what extent that border has changed.”

The only thing he has acknowledged is that he has made some comments that could be “inadequate”. The president has explained that he did so with the intention of “playing”, but has pointed out that they have been misunderstood: he attributes it to “a generational or cultural change” that he has not been able to interpret. However, he assured that the rest of the complaints were "politically motivated" and that what happened was "unfair and false".

First complaints

At the end of February, the first complaints against him began: a woman explained that the politician proposed to play the strip poker during a work trip when travelling on a private plane and that later the former governor kissed her in his office. Shortly after the first indictment, another woman reported that Cuomo had put her hand under her shirt and touched her breasts.

Kathy Hochul, Governor

The resignation of Cuomo will enter into force in two weeks’ time and her post will be occupied by Democrat Kathy Hochul, who has announced her resignation. Hochul, former Buffalo Congressman, will be the first woman to become New York City Governor.
