In recent days, the Israeli Army has wounded at least five United Nations blue helmets in attacks on the headquarters of UNIFIL, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, in the village of Naqoura. Netanyahu has stated that the Shi'an militia Hezbollah uses the blue helmets as "human shields" and has asked the UN to take its troops from Lebanon, the UN has reported. The UN has refused.
Israel has acknowledged that it has introduced a tank into the southern base of UN Lebanon to evacuate wounded soldiers in an attack by the Hezbollah Militia. “The Israeli Army has not created any danger to UN forces,” they explained. Conversely, UNIFIL has reported that several members have been injured (skin irritations and gastrointestinal problems, among others) by the entry of explosive smoke into the facility.
The Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has said that the UN has on several occasions been called upon to take its soldiers out of that camp because Hezbollah uses them as human shields. “Mr Secretary-General, take UNIFIL’s troops out of danger; right now we must do so immediately.” He added that the renunciation puts both UN and Israeli soldiers at risk: “We regret that UNIFIL soldiers have been injured and we are doing our best to prevent them. But the easiest way would be to get soldiers out of the danger zone.”
“Unacceptable”
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said that it is "unacceptable" to attack the blue helmets because it "violates" international law. It believes that this is a dangerous precedent, as the soldiers that the UN has in other countries may suffer the same consequences. The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, and the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Retno Marsudi, have also condemned Israel’s action and the Spanish Government’s President, Pedro Sánchez, has called on the West to “stop sending arms to the Netanyahu government.” For its part, the NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) has asked the UN to investigate the attacks on blue helmets in the region. Israel is "violating the laws of war," he denounced.
Israel kills over 42,000 Palestinians in Gaza
According to data provided by the Gaza Ministry of Health, the Israeli Army has killed more than 42,200 people and wounded almost 100,000 since 7 October 2023. The figure also continues to rise not only in Gaza, but also in Lebanon, where Israel has killed more than 2,300 people and wounded 10,500.
The Gaza authorities have indicated that there are some 400,000 Palestinians in the north of the Gaza Strip and that Israel is carrying out a "wave of systematic killings" in that area, "especially against civilians, women and children." On Sunday, 13, Israel killed 19 people in an attack on a school in the Al-Mufti area of Gaza. There were a lot of displaced families in the building. In addition, at least four Palestinians have died this morning in a bombing of the tents of the displaced at Al-Aqsa hospital. Israel has described the attack as a "frontal and direct attack on terrorists," Israel said.
For its part, the Lebanese Red Cross denounced on Sunday that several members of the terrorist organization suffered minor injuries as a result of the bombs launched by Israel. The Israeli Army has bombed a home and when the Red Cross paramedics have approached the wounded, it has attacked for the second time.
Iran: "We don't fear war, but we don't want war, we want peace."
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has said that Israel will continue to work for peace until its attacks on Gaza and Lebanon cease, but he has stressed that Iran is also ready for war. "The Islamic Republic of Iran does not want to deal with tension, conflict or war, despite its readiness to deal with any situation. We are prepared for war, but also for peace," he said. "We are not afraid of war, but we do not want war, we want peace, and we are going to defend it, both in Gaza and in Lebanon," he added.
